The phenomenon of new growth after the lizard's tail has fallen off is called epimorphosis. It is a kind of growth, a variant of regeneration. In this case, if any particular organ of the organism is damaged, it grows again through cell division. This type of growth is seen in the cells of the injured area, not elsewhere or throughout the body. (The phenomenon of whole body formation from fragmented parts of the body is another variant of regeneration, the process is called morphallaxis).
The common steps of epimorphosis are:
First, the lining of the epidermis falls on the injured area. The mesenchyme then turns into a blastema in the process of dedifferentiation and an apical ectodermal cap is formed, and finally the whole organ is formed by redistribution from there.
